Lambing time at Spindlewood Lodges

Lambing season has already started, and you can now see some of this year’s new lambs in our orchard which is just infront of Spindlewood lodges. It’s difficult to believe that it’s still only March given the hot weather we have been having and Easter is still two weeks away. We still have a couple of vacancies left for Easter so why not come and have a peaceful Easter break as well as seeing the progress of the lambs.

The Museum of Somerset

The Museum is now open to the public on after a £6.93m redevelopment.

The Museum of Somerset, which is located in Taunton Castle, is free to enter and is open from 10am to 5pm, Tuesday to Saturday and on Bank Holiday Mondays.

With many new galleries to explore, and extraordinary objects to discover, the Museum of Somerset is a must-see visitor attraction for people of all ages from across Somerset and beyond.

Glastonbury Tor

The Tor is famous for its connections with King Arthur and New Age mysticism, as well as being close to another mystical site, Chalice Well – the walk up the Tor takes about 20 minutes or so.

There is no car parking on site, but a special Tor bus runs from Glastonbury for most of the year. For more information please contact Glastonbury Tourist Information Centre.

What a wonderful attraction to visit on a nice sunny day!

Somerset Rural Life Museum

The Somerset Rural Life Museum is based in Glastonbury, Somerset.

The Somerset Rural Life Museum is based in Glastonbury. In the Abbey Farmhouse the social and domestic life of Victorian Somerset is described in reconstructed rooms and there is a lively events programme as well as regular temporary exhibitions. There is also a tea room and museum shop.

The magnificent fourteenth-century Abbey Barn is the centrepiece of the Museum. The barn and the farm buildings surrounding the courtyard contain displays and tools used in local rural activities such as mud horse fishing, peat digging and cider making.

Admission is free to the Somerset Rural Life Museum.

Spring is coming!

As we reach the last few days of February, spring is definitely in the air at Spindlewood! People have been ringing to book their Easter breaks and Peter has already cut the grass in front of the lodges.

This can be a lovely time to visit Somerset, with fewer tourists around and yet there is still much to see. Visitors last weekend were lucky enough to have lovely mild sunny weather and used this as an opportunity to vist Wells – both to see the cathedral (see earlier post) and the market which is held every Wednesday and Saturday in the market square.

Market day in Wells

The barn owl has been spotted making frequent trips across the grounds, searching for his dinner over the last few weeks. We hope we will see him throughout the year again.

Wells Cathedral

Wells Cathedral welcomes visitors every day of the year and it is really only by coming in person that you can properly experience this wonderful and holy place.

The foundations of the previous cathedral can be seen in the Camery Gardens just by the cathedral. Wells Cathedral has probably the grandest West Front of any cathedral in Britain. It still retains over 300 of the original medieval statues. Inside the Cathedral are the magnificent Scissor Arches. These were built in the fourteenth century to strengthen and support the heightened central tower. The cathedral clock is unique as it still has its original medieval 24 hour clock face and complicated mechanical figures which move and ring a bell every quarter hour.

Spindlewood South West self-catering log cabins are only 5.2 miles away from this amazing historical cathedral taking on average 15 minutes to get there.

January at Spindlewood

We may be closed for visitors in January, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t busy here at Spindlewood Self Catering Lodges!

This is the time of year when we get the lodges ready for the new season. We have bookings from the beginning of February so now is the time we check the lodges and make any minor repairs if required. Just one new kitchen left to install and then all seven lodges will have brand new kitchens.

New Lodge Kitchen

You will be pleased to know that the chickens and ducks are still thriving and we continue to get four chicken eggs a day, although the ducks only manage one a day between them! The ducks have also worked out how to get over to the lodges now so if you come to stay don’t be surprised to find a few feathered friends visiting your verandah.
