A beautiful day at Shapwick Heath Nature Reserve
If you come and stay with us at any time of the year - but particularly in Spring and Autumn - we thoroughly recommend a trip to Shapwick Heath Nature Reserve.
Just 12 miles from Spindlewood, this is a haven for birds and wildlife and has featured several times on the BBC programme "SpringWatch / AutumnWatch". We decided to take a stroll through the reserve yesterday, as well as spending some time in the hides watching the birds on the lakes. The weather was perfect and the size of the reserve (around 500 hectares - i.e. BIG!) means that you see very few other people.
Shapwick heath makes up part of the vast Somerset Levels and Moors area that run from the Mendips to the Blackdown Hills.
We will be back early November to see if we can catch the Starling Spectacular. You can find out more at Avalon Marshes
