Spring is in the air....

Well the weather has been improving more recently and we have had some wonderful sunsets here at Spindlewood. The Barn Owl has become quite a regular visitor to Spindlewood over the last few weeks - and long may that continue as we love seeing him - even after living here for 14 years, we still get excited when he makes an appearance! If you fancy a last minute break, why not take advantage of our special offer which sees prices reduced to just £299 for a week and £199 for a short break for stays between now and 18 March? Book...

Happy New Year everyone!

OK - so I am a bit late to wish you happy new year. I apologise. Spindlewood is closed in January and we therefore took the opportunity to go off on holiday for a week. But we are now back and busy getting the lodges ready for 2016. We are currently checking all the lodges to see what items need replacing and new mattresses have been ordered for the single beds (the double mattresses were replaced last year). Given the amount of rain we have had recently, it is difficult to do much outside. although Peter plans to do some maintenance...

Christmas is coming

Where has the year gone? Suddenly Christmas is looming and we have furiously been writing Christmas cards to friends and custmers alike. The decorations are going up in the house as I write this and we are also looking forward to welcoming those customers who have booked with us for Christmas this year. The lodges are a nice warm and cosy place to be over the festive period and we always ensure there is some christmas cheer with a decorated tree in each lodge. Whilst the weather may be univiting at this time of year, we often see fantastic...

A beautiful day at Shapwick Heath Nature Reserve

If you come and stay with us at any time of the year - but particularly in Spring and Autumn - we thoroughly recommend a trip to Shapwick Heath Nature Reserve. Just 12 miles from Spindlewood, this is a haven for birds and wildlife and has featured several times on the BBC programme "SpringWatch / AutumnWatch". We decided to take a stroll through the reserve yesterday, as well as spending some time in the hides watching the birds on the lakes. The weather was perfect and the size of the reserve (around 500 hectares - i.e. BIG!) means that...

Beautiful sunshine continues in Somerset

Well, what fantastic weather we are having! The people in the lodges this week are having amazing weather and when I strolled along today, many were soaking up the sun sitting on their verandas. The bad news, however, is that we have no ducklings - I think little duck was trying her hardest but having sat on eggs for 6 weeks (it should only be 4) there were no baby chicks. She has now returned to the other ducks and been sunning herself as well as taking the occasional dip - oh its a hard life being a duck! Meanwhile, we have...

September arrives with sunshine!

So - for many it is now back to school. For those who don't have children at school, now can be a great time to get a break away. September is often one of the nicest times weatherwise and the weather for the last couple of days has given us plenty of welcome sunshine. We are also looking forward - with some trepidation - to the impending arrival of ducklings. Our little duck has been busy sitting on eggs for the last few weeks and we are hoping that she will be rewarded next week with some babies...I will update the news on this as soon...

Have you heard the news about Banksy's new exhibition - Dismaland? Billed at "the UK's most disappointing new visitor attraction" it is certainly attracting attention. Whether or not you like the idea, thousands of people are flocking to area and hoping to see the exhibition in the next 5 weeks - it ends on 25th September 2015. We are 28 miles from Dismaland, so if you fancy a visit, you could combine a bit of depressing culture (?!) with some R&R in the beautiful Somerset Countryside....a bit of a contrast maybe....

Spindlewood Sunshine (with a little rain)

Well August has been a busy month so far - and we are full until the end of the month. The very popular local Shepton Show was held on Sunday and the weather was very kind to all who attended. In fact we have been very lucky with the weather and whilst it has been rainy for the last couple of days, it has been a mainly dry month. The "spindlewood orchard" is now beginning to bear fruit and visitors to the lodges are no doubt going to be out picking / scrumping! Before they do though, I will make sure I pick some apples to make...

August at Spindlewood

So - August is now upon us. The lodges are full, the weather has been kind for the first 2 days and we are looking forward to a month with lots of visitors enjoying the countryside and wildlife we have to offer. There have been regular sightings of badgers and deer over the past few weeks, along with twitchers having recorded seeing a host of different birds. Those particularly worthy of mention are woodpeckers (both green and spotted) as well as the 2 local barn owls who put on a great show over the long grass whilst searching for supper. We...
